Artist's notes:
Illustration is my preferred term for what I do, rather than art. While the drawings are artistic, I believe them to be more representational and realistic and less interpretive and creative. I have tried very hard to make illustrations that cannot be mistaken for other species of animals, and this is where I started to find something resembling success. I had little clue as to the different species, say, of a turtle. I reasoned that people would want a sort of generic turtle, with a shell, head poking out and so forth. I had little idea that there were pond turtles, mud turtles, terrapins, snapping turtles, and hundred more varying in size, shape and ecosystem. I soon learned that making images of specific species that truly represented the animal and completely true to it's anatomy was what was going to generate interest and results. And the same held true of all the other types of animals; birds, mammals, insects, underwater animals and so forth.
