The English Bulldog was completed on 1.14.2012. This is the first dog breed I've attempted. In the end I hope to create about 6-10 illustration of various dogs. I had noticed that most of the drawings of bulldogs showed them sitting or simply standing, which I thought didn't capture their personality well enough. I went for an "action shot" trying to demonstrate the playfulness of these wonderful dogs. The drawing is based on a photo by Michael Kaltenmark.
The English Bulldog is a breed of dog with a very broad head, very muscular and is covered with loose skin that results in the characteristic wrinkles, especially around the head and shoulder areas. Males usually weigh about 55 pounds, and the females about 45 pounds. They are not dogs who need a lot of exercise, and are good for apartment living. Nearly all bulldogs are delivered via Caesarean section. And like other purebreds, they can have chronic health issues usually resulting in a lowered lifespan. Generally, these gregarious dogs live to be about 8-12 years, but some surveys put this number much lower. The bulldog is one of the traditional symbols of the British Empire, along with being the mascot for several American universities, most notably the University of Georgia.
