The African Lioness was completed on 1.9.2010. It was drawn as a companion piece to the African Lion. The illustration is based on a photo by A.J. Haverkamp. A foreshortened subject is always a little tricky, as everything is 'condensed' in the picture. I think it works here as the head sticks out and the body recedes.
Lions are the second largest living cats on earth, second behind the tiger. Unlike other cats lions are social and live in 'prides' which generally consist of some related females, offspring and a small number of adult males. While not endangered, the African Lion is considered vulnerable having seen a steep decline in it's population in the last two decades. African Lions live in the Sub-Saharan regions of Africa.
