The African Spurred Tortoise line art was completed in 2004 and the color added digitally in 2007. These torts are HUGE. I often visit the Wildlife World Zoo in Arizona and I always enjoy seeing these juggernauts.
The African Spurred Tortoise is the largest of the mainland tortoises. These reptiles inhabits the southern edge of the sub-Sahara desert in north Africa. They can grow to be over 3 feet long and weigh well over 100 pounds. They have growth rings on the scutes that are strongly marked with age. Tortoises are important to deserts because their burrows provide shelter for other animals. Although they grow to be very large, sulcatas are often kept as pets.
