The African Wild Dog was completed on March 29th, 2009. I had wanted to draw one of these amazing canines for a few years. I wanted a pose that showed the entire animal and it's amazing coat. As always I found the fur very challenging but it seems to have turned out good and pretty accurate. The drawing is based on a photo by Nick Lawes.
The African Wild Dog, also called the African Hunting Dog, Spotted Dog and Painted Wolf, is found only in Africa. It inhabits scrub savanna and other areas not heavily wooded. The canine has a beautiful coat of tan, black and white and each pattern is unique. They are medium sized dogs generally weighing between 40-75 pounds and standing at 30 inches at the shoulder. Like wolves the wild dog hunts in packs with nearly all of the members participating. They feed mostly on large savanna animals such as Wildebeest and Zebras. It is the only species of Lycaon. The African Wild Dog's conservation status is endangered.
