This drawing is based on photos and sketches I did at the Phoenix Zoo. The line art version was completed in 2003 and the digital tinting added in 2007. While typical Aldabra Tortoise are usually all gray, the one I worked from had this pinkish hue on it. Here's the original photo I worked from. The illustration was used for the information sign in the new Aldabra tortoise exhibit in the Dallas Zoo. I had spoken to a naturalist in the Seychelles about using this image for a limited set of prints of the native animals of the island. After a massive Tsunami hit the island, I never heard from him again.
The Aldabra Tortoise is second only to the Galapagos tortoise as the biggest land tortoise in the world. These large reptiles can weigh more than 500 pounds with a shell more than five feet long. The shell is high, domed and is generally dark brown or gray in color. Their legs are very stout, and the front ones are partly covered with big scales. Both front and back feet have powerful claws.
