The drawing of an Allen's Hummingbird was completed on 5.14.2011. This is the fifth illustration I've done of a hummingbird. Like the previous images, I chose to show the bird in flight, as I think this is the most attractive view of the animal. I had considered adding a flower to the drawing, but that would be somewhat incongruous with the other renderings. The drawing is based on a photo by David Marotta.
The Allen's Hummingbird is a small species of hummingbird, reaching lengths of only 3-3.5 inches long (75-90 mm) The habitat they're found in is brushy woods, gardens and open meadows in the coastal areas of California and Oregon. During the winter the birds migrate south to Mexico. Like all hummingbird, Allen's Hummingbirds have extremely high metabolism which means they must eat about every hour. Selasphorus sasin feeds on nectar from flowers, but will also eagerly feed from manmade feeders. The bird is named in honor of Charles Andrew Allen, who was an American naturalist and taxidermists.
