A line art version of the American Bison version was completed in 2006 and digital tinting added in 10.09. I was very unhappy with the results however, so I decided to completely redo the illustration in November of 2009. The new version of the bison drawing was completed on 11.20.09. The drawing is based on a photo by Josh More.
The American Bison - more commonly referred to as the Buffalo which is actually not closely related to - is a large North American mammal. The bison once roamed the grasslands of central North America in massive herds. Overhunting and development of their native lands in the 19th century pushed the bison to near extinction, numbering only in the low 100s. Towards the end of the 1800s there was a push for their preservation and aggressive breeding and reintroduction projects were started. Even after over a century there are thought to only be roughly 20,000 bison in the wild today.
