The American Red Squirrel was completed on 12.22.2010. My friend Jason was hoping to give a print of a squirrel to a friend, and I had been kicking around the idea of drawing a red squirrel, so when he asked I thought it was the perfect excuse to whip one up. The drawing is based on a photo by Jen Goellnitz.
The American Red Squirrel, also called Pine Squirrels, North American Red Squirrels, or Chickarees, are widely distributed over much of North America, including most of Canada, and south into the Rocky Mountains in the west and the Adirondacks in the northeast. Red Squirrels are mostly granivores (which means seed predator) although they will supplement their diets with other items such as mushrooms, flowers and berries.
