The black and white ink drawing of the Anhinga was commissioned by Stackpole Books for Laura Erickson's '101 Ways to Help Birds.' I added the digital tinting to the stipple drawing sometime in 2007. The first time I had ever seen these impressive birds was in Big Cypress National Preserve in Florida, and they've been a favorite of mine ever since. I wish they were native to the Bay Area!
The Anhinga is a shorebird native to the warmer parts of North America and South America. It is a member of the darter family. While it is not closely related to the cormorant, it shares the ability to stay submerged for significant periods of time when hunting. The name 'Anhinga' comes from the Brazilian Tupi language meaning devil bird or snake bird, because when it is hunting only the neck appears and it looks somewhat like a snake about to strike.
