The Argentine Black White Tegu was completed on 10.12.09. The illustration is based on photos and sketches I did of the animal at the Sacramento Reptile show in September of 2009. These lizards are very handsome and I'm glad I was able to finally draw one.
The Argentine Black and White Tegu - sometime simply called the Black and White Tegu - is the largest species of Tegu on earth. They are found in the tropical rainforests of eastern and central parts of South America. They are considered highly intelligent for reptiles. These lizards grow to roughly four feet in length at maturity. When born the hatchlings are bright green with black markings. As the reptile matures, the green fades usually within a few months. Tegus are very popular in the pet trade, and in some cases have even been trained to use litter boxes.
