The Atlantic or Common Octopus was the first cephalopod I'd ever drawn, going back to about 1998, when the line art was completed. The tinting was added around 2007, then it was touched up again in 2009. I've drawn quite a few since then along with some other octopi. They remain one of my favorite subjects to illustrate.
The Common Octopus is a medium sized cephalopod growing about 24-36 inches in length. They are found in tropical, subtropical and temperate oceans all around the world. They generally stay in coastal waters in the shallows where they hunt for fish, crustaceans and bivalves. Like all octopuses, Octopus vulgaris is an expert at camouflage. They are able to change the texture of their skin along with the color to blend into their surroundings. When threatened they can discharge a large dark cloud of ink.
