The Atlantic Tarpon was completed on 6.21.09. The original ink drawing was completed in 2007. I didn't know much about these fascinating fish, but as with all animals I draw when I study the physical characteristics of them I try to learn about their habits and behaviors as well. Tarpons are popular with fisherman and their tenacity is famous. I hope I've been able to capture this in the drawing.
Atlantic Tarpon are large elopiforme (ray-finned fishes) which inhabit coastal waters, estuaries and lagoons of the Atlantic coastline of the Americas and Europe, typically in the more tropical and subtropical regions. They can grow to be over seven feet long weighing over 350 pounds. The tarpon is a prized saltwater game fish, but the fish itself is not very edible and it is illegal to catch and keep one without a permit, so most fishing of this animal is 'catch and release.' It is the official saltwater fish of the state of Alabama.
