The Baltimore Oriole was completed on 7.14.2010. I had originally draw one of these birds several years ago, but wasn't too happy with the result. This image is a lot stronger I feel. The drawing is based on a photo by wildlife photographer Eleanor Briccetti.
The Baltimore Oriole is a small migratory blackbird of the Icteridae family. The bird received it's distinctive name not having to do with the city of Baltimore, but rather the fact that the birds striking black and orange colors were reminiscent of the color of the coat of arms of Lord Baltimore. The range of this bird during the summer is over much of the eastern part of North America, and during the winter it heads south to Central America and into South America. This songbird is the state bird of Maryland.
