The line art version of the Bearded Dragon drawing was completed in 2004 and the digital tinting added in 2007. It is based on an image by talented herp photographer and solider Dennis Desmond. I was motivated to draw this spectacular looking reptile in large part to their popularity as a pet. Although I have come to appreciate them as both an excellent and handsome reptile and a wonderful pet.
Bearded Dragons have a wide natural distribution in eastern and central Australia. They are named bearded dragons because of their "beard," an expandable throat pouch with spiky scales. Color for this species depends on the soil of the region they live in, ranging from dull brown to tan with red or gold highlights. Adults typically are 19-23 inches and weight at least 3/4 of a pound (250 grams.) Bearded Dragons make excellent reptile pets.
