The Black Howler Monkeys were completed on 1.29.2011. This drawing was commissioned for a graphics company in Belize, and it will eventually be used for a shirt to be sold in the Belize Zoo. Although in the finished image both monkeys were black, and the tree was enlarged and the leaves moved around somewhat. When I was in Costa Rica, I saw these monkeys, and often heard them and their impressive howls.
Black Howler Monkeys are a medium-sized species of the New World Monkeys, native to the tropical rainforests of South and Central America. Like most other monkeys, they have prehensile tails, and uses them to help move them through the jungle canopy. Howlers live in groups of 10 to 20 individuals. As their name suggests, their vocalizations are very important to them, and it is thought they are one, if not the, loudest animal on the planet and their calls can be heard for miles around. While Howlers generally do not make good pets, Black Howlers are the most docile and are sometimes kept as pets.
