This was the first (non-tarantula) spider I've drawn. I wasn't sure how it would look, because Black Widows are basically all black except for the 'hourglass' red markings on the abdomen. I got a little creative with the highlights and had some fun with the spider's web. I think it turned out fairly well. The shiny, hard black carapace of the arachnid is something that conveys well with the line art style of the drawing.
The Black Widow Spiders are found in many areas of North America. They are famous for their venom - which is more potent than that of many poisonous snakes such as the cobra. Contrary to popular belief, the males are not always consumed after mating, but it does often happen. The spiders have been accidentally introduced into Sweden and Denmark and have established themselves in those areas.
