I had done a rough sketch of this drawing back in 2005, but it wasn't until 2008 that I worked up a formal and final version of the Blanding's turtle. It is based on an image (with permission given) by the talented wildlife photographer Jim Rowan.
The Blanding's Turtle is a semi-aquatic reptile native to Great Lakes area and outwards to the East Coast and north to Ontario. It prefers weedy marshes, ponds, bogs streams and slow moving rivers. This reptile is omnivorous and will eat various invertebrates, along with fish, frogs, plants, carrion and vegetable debris. Depending on the area of the US it is either considered endangered or threatened. It is the proposed state turtle of Minnesota.
