The pair of Blue or Common Discus Fish drawing was completed on March 27th, 2009. I had been visiting the Steinhardt Aquarium in it's temporary location on Howard Street in San Francisco (it's now in it's permanent location at the new California Academy of Sciences) and I did some sketches of a Discus Fish. Years later I found the sketches and some photos and decided to make a drawing of these wonderful fish. I don't often get to draw blue animals, which are uncommon, so it was a lot of fun to draw this pair.
The Discus Fish is a freshwater cichlid found in the Amazon River basin. There are three subspecies, with a fourth recently discovered and awaiting confirmation. Cichlids like the Discus Fish generally inhabit lakes or slower areas of rivers. The family of Cichlids is very diverse and many species are found in aquatic habitats of Asia, and South and Central America. These beautiful fish come in many varieties and coloration and are very popular as aquarium pets.
