An earlier sketch of the Borneo Red Flying Frog was fist attempted in 2005. It languished in the 'to finish' pile for some years, until it was completed with the permission of the photographer. The digital tinting was added in 2008. The illustration is based on an amazing photo by the talented UK wildlife photographer Mark Fogden.
The Borneo Red Flying Frog, also known as the Harlequin tree frog, is native to Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. It can be found in subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and freshwater marshes. It is threatened by habitat loss. This frog is easy to identify because of it's large sized and distinctive bright red webbed hands and feet (which it uses to help steer it's gliding.) It's commonly found in the rainforest of Asia although little is known about it as it lives high up in the rainforest canopy.
