Box Turtles (called box tortoises in some areas) are a genus of reptile native to much of central and southern North America, as well as some areas of Asia. There are twelve recognized species. All box turtles are characterized by a high, domed carapace. Unlike most turtles, they are entirely terrestrial. The size of the turtles vary, with the Ornate and Three-Toed Turtles being about 6" inches long to the Eastern, Gulf Coast Chinese and Malayan which are about 8" inches. They are extremely long lived, with an average age of 50 years, and can live to be well over 100. Box Turtles are omnivorous, and will feed on a variety of plant matter as well as small invertebrates such as worms, crickets, snails, along with carrion like road kill. They are very popular in the pet trade and are often kept in indoor enclosures. This has led to them to over collected in the wild and in some areas of their native range they have been virtually eliminated and are now protected.
