The Brown-Capped Rosy Finch was completed on 12.27.2010. I wasn't familiar with this lovely colored birds until I noticed one in a Photostream on Flickr. The color combination of the browns, pinks and dark blue I find very striking. The drawing is based on an image by wildlife photographer David Cree.
Like other Rosy Finches, the Brown-Capped Rosy Finch is a medium-sized member of the Leucosticte family. During the warmer part of the year they live in the mountain peaks of the Rocky Mountains in the US. In winter they migrate down to lower elevations in the same area. The birds feed mainly and seeds from grasses and weeds, but will occasionally take an insect in flight. Rosy-finches build their nests in small crevices where it's completely in the shade.
