The Cactus Wren illustration was commissioned by Stackpole Books for Laura Erickson's 101 Ways to Help Birds. The line art version was completed in 2005 and the digital tinting added in 2007. I love seeing these active birds, and amaze as the fly from cactus to cactus in the desert.
The Cactus Wren is the largest North America Wren. It grows to 7-9 inches long. Like other birds in it's genus it has a slightly curved beak. The Cactus Wren feeds mainly on insects, including beetles, grasshoppers and wasps. Although it will sometimes feed on fruit. The Cactus Wren is commonly seen in the deserts of the American southwest and into northern Mexico, perched on cactus, yucca or ocotillo singing loudly. It is the official bird of the state of Arizona.
