The California Condor was commissioned by Stackpole Books for Laura Erickson's '101 Ways to Help Birds.' The image was drawn in 2005 and the color added in 2007. Condors are a favorite bird of mine and I hope to one day catch at least a glimpse of one in the wild. UPDATE: During a trip to Pinnacles National Monument I was able to catch a glimpse of one of these birds nesting - although it was through a telescope.
The California Condor is a New World vulture and the largest flying land bird in North America. This bird is considered critically endangered and several programs have been initiated to reintroduce it into the wild. Currently it can only be found in the Grand Canyon area of Arizona, Zion National Park in Utah and in remote mountainous areas in California and Baja.
