The California Cone was completed on 6.11.2011. I had a sketch of a Black Panther already on my drawing board, but decided to move this gastropod in front of it. It was kind of an experiment, as for the first time I used a standard ink pen, rather than my old school nib and ink well for the drawing. I'm not sure I'm ready to give over to this new instrument, but it certain would be cleaner than the nib and ink. The drawing is based on a photo by Gary McDonald
The California cone is a marine gastropod mollusk. It belongs to the family Conidae, which are the the cone snails. The California cone are predatory animals, and hunt and feed on marine worms and other mollusks. It will also scavenge for food. This gastropod is somewhat out of the ordinary, because it lives in the cold waters of the eastern Pacific Ocean coastal areas of California north to San Francisco, whereas most other cone snails are found in warm tropical waters. Unlike other similar species, it is active in the day rather than crepuscular.
