The California Red-Legged Frog was completed on 3/22/2009. This was a re-do from a drawing from about three years ago. I am much happier with this as it's more accurate and three-dimensional than previous version. The drawing is based on a photo by Jack Lin. I decided for the red morph of this frog (because often they are more of a green-gray color) because I wanted to contrast the colors with the other, more typical green frogs of North America.
The California Red-Legged Frog is a medium to large sized amphibian. It is found almost exclusively in the state of California. The are generally found in the foothills of the Northern and Southern Sierras as well as the Coastal Range. Due to habitat destruction they are considered threatened and in some of their traditional range they have disappeared. They are the frogs described in Mark Twain's short story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County."
