The California Seagull illustration was completed on 11/28/2008. It was commissioned by a private client and is based on a photo by Damian D Smith. The illustration was drawn as a companion piece to the Common Raven, and used accompanying a poem/story.
The California Gull is a medium-sized gull. They are migratory, most moving to the Pacific coast in winter. These birds forage in flight or pick up objects while swimming, walking or wading. They mainly eat insects, fish and eggs. They also scavenge at garbage dumps or docks. They may follow plows in fields for insects stirred up by this activity. At one time it held protected status in California due to species decline, but it has rebounded and now has a stable population. It is the official bird of the state of Utah.
