The Caracal was completed on 9.29.2010. This was an interesting and tricky subject. I'm not as happy with the results as I am with other drawings generally. I thought the portrait view would result in a more interesting pose, but for some reason it seems a little flat in the nose area especially. I might re-do this illustration at some point.
The Caracal is a small to medium-sized wild cat native to the the savannahs, steppes, semi-deserts, woodlands and scrubby forests of Africa and western parts of Asia. At one time these cats were considered to be a type of lynx. But now it's believed these predatory mammals are more closely related to the African Golden Cat and the Serval. Like other wild cats they are mostly solitary. The Caracal is known for it's acrobatic jumping method of catching birds in flight or taking off. Unlike many big cats the Caracal is not considered endangered.
