This is the first dragonfly I had drawn. It was based on a photo I took in Dry Creek regional park near Fremont, CA. I love the dynamic position of the dragonfly (in many photos I've taken they look very static and stationary) which seems about to jump off the plant at any second. The original line art drawing was done in 2003 and color was added in 2008. I love the name of this dragonfly - the 'Meadowhawk.'
The Cardinal Meadowhawk Dragonfly is in the order Odonata and the family Libellulidae. They are found in the western portions of British Columbia all the way down to South America. They are generally found near lakes and ponds, and will be found searching grassy meadows looking for prey. They grow to about 3.5 inches in size.
