The Chimpanzee was completed on March 10th. As before with the Mountain Gorilla and the Sumatran Orangutan this primate gave me some serious problem. I still struggle with fur. All in all I'd say this worked out ok and I'm happy with the result. The drawing is based on a photo by A.J. Haverkamp. I chose a younger ape as a subject for the drawing because I believe they're closer to the ideal image of what humans think of when they picture a chimpanzee.
Chimpanzee, also called simply as chimp, is the common name for the two extant species of ape in the genus Pan where the Congo River forms the boundary between the native habitat of the two species. Chimpanzees are members of the Hominidae family, along with gorillas, humans, and orangutans. Chimpanzee are thought to have split from human evolution about 6 million years ago and thus the two chimpanzee species are the closest living relatives to humans. Chimpanzees will make tools and use them to acquire foods and for social displays. These apes have sophisticated hunting strategies requiring cooperation, influence and rank; they are status conscious, manipulative and capable of deception; they can learn to use symbols and understand aspects of human language including some relational syntax, concepts of number and numerical sequence. Recent studies and observations have shown they are capable of spontaneous planning for a future state or event.
