The ink version of the Collared Lizard was completed in 2004 and the digital tinting added in 2007. I'm not certain, but I believe this to be an Eastern Collared Lizard. At some point I may draw both reptiles - just to be sure. I've often looked for these colorful lizards in the desert but as of 2011 haven't managed to to see one.
The Collared Lizard is native to the western states of the U.S. They inhabit rocky areas with sparse vegetation. They grow to about 8-14 inches including tail. Males tend to be green to tan colored with patterns of dorsal spots and bars to a speckled pattern across the dorsum. The lizards possess two prominent collar-like black bands at their neck, hence their name.
