The Collared Peccary was completed on 12.4.09. Again, another cool animal of the deserts of the Southwestern US. While I've never encountered one in the wilds, I have seen them at the Desert Museum in Tucson, Arizona. They make the typical little cute pig grunt as they wander around looking for food. The drawing is based on a photo by Warren Lynn.
The Collared Peccary - also called the Javelina, Mexican Hog or Musk Hog - is a medium sized mammal indigenous to the forests and deserts of North, South and Central America. While often called pigs, they are now not considered part of the family Suidae. They feed on plant matter such as nuts, fruits, roots, tubers, grasses and small vertebrates. These animals are diurnal foraging through the day and sleeping at night, sometimes in burrows or under the roots of trees. They are social animals living in groups of up to twenty individuals.
