The Common California Scorpion was completed on 2.18.2011. Scorpions are fun to draw. Something about their exoskeleton and the texture of their bodies really works in this medium. The pose of this scorpion is so fierce and menacing - even without the eyes the message is clear - stay back! The drawing is based on a photo by California wildlife photographer Alice Abela.
The Common California Scorpion is frequently encountered predatory arthropod of the class Arachnida. While not deadly, they can inflict a nasty painful sting for anyone unfortunate enough to accidently step on one or otherwise threaten them. Otherwise, this arachnid spends much of the day under dead logs, rocks or other small crevices, coming out at night to hunt smaller insects and invertebrates. They're not large - only about 3- 3.5 inches long (7cm)
