The Common Raven was commissioned by a private client and completed on 11/24/2008. It was a straightforward subject - being a simple black bird. But it turns out ravens are not exactly black. Their feathers are a dark iridescent blue-purple color which, when the light hits them the right way, reflects and shines as the illustration shows.
The Common Raven, also called the Northern Raven, is a large black bird in the crow family. It can be found all across the northern hemisphere. Ravens are omnivorous diet and are extremely versatile and opportunistic in finding sources of nutrition. They will feed on carrion, insects and food waste, some grains, berries, fruit and even small animals. This intelligent bird was immortalized in popular culture in Edgar Allen Poe's famous poem 'The Raven.'
