The Common Water Strider was completed on 8.26.2010. This image was part of a project for the Lodi Lake Watershed nature area. The illustrations will be used in a visitor center that explains the ecosystem of the area, and highlights some of the animals that can be found there. While this image includes a lily pad, the version used in the panels will show only water with no vegetation.
Water striders - called 'Pond Skaters' in some areas - live on the surface of ponds, slow streams, marshes, and other still or slow moving waters. They feed on dead and living insects on the water's surface. They have excellent vision, and can move very quickly. The water strider's long middle legs help move it across the surface of the water like paddles. The hind legs are used to steer, and also act as brakes. The short front legs are used to catch prey.
