The Desert Bighorn is a 're-do' from an earlier drawing. For all the times I've ventured into the mountainous desert areas where these beautiful animals roam, I've never been fortunate enough to catch site of them. I did manage to see them, however, at the excellent outdoor exhibit at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum.
The Desert Bighorn Sheep is a subspecies of Bighorn Sheep found in the mountainous desert areas of the Southwestern US and into northern Mexico. Like other bighorn, they have padded hooves that allow them to traverse the steep, rocky terrain of the desert mountains. They have excellent eyesight which are used to help avoid mountain lions, bobcats and other predators. These sheep have developed the ability to go long periods of time without needing water. Growth rings in the horns indicate the age of the animal. It is the official state animal of Nevada.
