The Desert Tortoise was completed in 2008. It is based on photos I took while leaving Death Valley. We saw this tortoise attempting to cross a highway. I picked it up and carried it over (which I regretted, as I was told you shouldn't even handle them!) and watched as it slowly moved into the desert brush. It was a very cool encounter.
The Desert Tortoise is a terrestrial reptile with a domed shell and round elephantine hind legs. They are found in the southwestern United States into northwest Mexico. These tortoises have extremely long nails, which are used in digging through the sand to find shelter. The tortoises weight 8-15 pounds and can grow to about 15 inches. They can live to be 80 years. The Desert Tortoise is the official state reptile of California and Nevada.
