The Downy Woodpecker was completed on 10.12.2011. These little birds are super charming, and this was a pleasure to render. The image is part of a repurposing of a derelict airport in the Boston area, and will be part of about 30 different wildlife images that will be used on signs in a new nature park that will go up in place of the no longer used airport. The drawing is based on a photo by Don Delaney.
The Downy Woodpecker is the smallest woodpecker species in North America. While they look much like the larger Hairy Woodpecker they are not very closely related. These birds cover many different types of environments over most of the North American continent and reside there nearly the entire year (although some might head further south during the coldest winter months.) These active little birds can be found in open woodlands, usually around deciduous trees or brushy areas near open meadows, urban areas and city parks. They are also common visitors to backyard birdfeeders.
