The Eastern American Toad was completed on 8.31.2011. It has been quite some time since I had drawn an amphibian, and longer since I had added a toad to the image library. Some time ago I had a client inquire about having some custom animal illustrations done, and the list included many I hadn't drawn. The Eastern American Toad is a small to medium sized amphibian native to much of the eastern parts of North America, from the northeastern parts of Canada, down south into Georgia and east through much of the mid-western states. It is a subspecies of the American Toad. They are found in the swamps, marshes, ponds of the forests. Once they grow to adulthood, they spent most of their lives on dry land, returning to the water only to breed. Like other similar species, the coloration of the Eastern American Toad varies, from a dark, dingy browns and grays to bright reds, oranges and flashes of yellow. The toad feeds on various small invertebrates such as worms, crickets, spiders, slugs, ants. Predators of the toad include the Northern Raccoon, Eastern Garter Snake and Hog-Nosed Snakes.
