The Eastern Gray Squirrel was completed on 11.18.2011. This was a really tough drawing, and I'm a little disappointed it's not as good as some of my more recent work. I sometimes struggle with fur, and this is a good example of what can go wrong if the foundational ink drawing isn't as strong as it could or should be. I believe I was able to salvage the drawing to some extent. But overall I wish it could have been a little stronger. The drawing is based on a photo by Brett Klaproth.
The Eastern Gray Squirrel (or simply Gray Squirrel depending on the region) is an arboreal mammal of the order of Rodentia (rodents) They are native to much of the eastern and mid-western areas of North America. They are highly adaptable animals, and because of this in areas they have been introduced (such as Britain and Ireland) they have largely displaced the native red squirrels. While it is called the Gray Squirrel, it also has some tan and brown in it's fur, and there are even pure white albino specimens of this species that are fairly common. These rodents can live in nearly any environment as long as it's not too hot and dry or too cold. They have readily adapted to life in urban areas and in some cases they can become so docile as to take food from the hands of humans.
