The illustration of the Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake was completed on 8.18.2010. The pose of the snake is really what makes this image. It was originally based on a photo of a Prairie Rattlesnake, but a client preferred the species to be one from the area he lived. So, with a few tweaks I changes the species. The photo the drawing is based was made by Keith Heitmann.
The Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake is a venomous pit viper found mostly in the US and up into parts of Canada. They can grow to almost 30 inches long. These snakes feed mostly on small vertebrates, invertebrates and mammals, lizards and other snakes. In general, these rattlesnakes shy away from human contact and will only bite when they feel threatened.
