Artist's notes:

eastern newt thumbThe Eastern Newt was completed on 12/21/2010. Amphibians are perhaps my favorite class of animals to draw, which makes their worldwide decline all the more hard to swallow. I'm trying to knock down all the North American amphibians, and the Eastern Newt was an important one (although I considered drawing the juvenile 'red dwarf' phase of the animal, I usually try and draw only adults. The illustration is based on a photo by Todd Pierson.

Information about the Eastern Newt:

Eastern newts are small sized amphibians - 2.5 - 4 inches long (6.3 - 10 cm) native to the wet forests with small lakes or ponds of Eastern North America. Eastern newts eat a variety of foods such as insects, small mollusks and crustaceans, worms, other smaller amphibians, and the eggs of frogs and toads. The Eastern Newt does well in captivity and is often kept as an aquarium pet. While the species is not considered endangered, if an area becomes polluted the newts will die off and not return.
