The Emerald Glass Frog was completed on 9.3.2010. It is my 400th full color illustration. For number 400 I wanted to pick a subject that reflected my library of animal images as a whole. I decided on the tropical rainforest gem this frog is appropriately called. Getting the angle right, so that you can actually see the amphibians internal organs was critical, and the talented wildlife photographer Luis A. Bonachea was kind enough to allow me to use his excellent photo as a reference. I added this frog to a collection of animals I find to be as amazing as anything from another planet imagined by sci-fi writers.
The Emerald Glass Frog is a species of small, arboreal amphibian native to the tropical and sub-tropical moist lowland forests of Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panamá, Colombia and Ecuador. The are so named due to the fact you can actually peer through their translucent skin and see the internal organs of their lower abdomen. While this frog isn't considered endangered, it does face some major threats such as deforestation, pollution and warmer temperatures due to climate change.
