The emperor Scorpion was completed on 2.14.2012. I'd been meaning to draw one of these wicked looking invertebrate for a long time. Arachnids are a lot of fun to draw, as the texture and contours are really conducive to the medium of ink and digital tinting. I'm considering drawing another species of scorpion, but am unsure of which one (please send me an email if you have a suggestion!) The drawing is based on a photo Cyrille Le Déaut.
The Emperor Scorpion is a species of arachnid native to the African rainforest and open savannahs. It is one of the largest scorpions on the planet - about 7.9 inches (20 centimeters.) They have an average lifespan of 5-8 years. Being a very striking blue-black coloration these scorpions are popular as pets and are often kept in captivity, which unfortunately has led to over-collecting.
