The Ethiopian Wolf was completed on 12.17.2011. My fascination with wolves started many years ago when I encountered one northern Minnesota in the wild. Since then the wolves have been a favorite subject of mine, and I'm slowly going through all the various species, which I believe number less than 20. The drawing is based on a photo by John Carthy.
The Ethiopian Wolf - also called Abyssinian wolf or fox, red jackal, Simien fox, or Simien jackal is a large predatory mamma native to Ethiopian highlands (9800 feet or 3,000 meters) in Africa. They are medium-sized wolves and closely resemble the coyote. It weighs about 25-43 pounds, with the males being somewhat larger. At this time the species is limited to seven isolated mountain ranges. More than half of living members of this endangered wild dog live in the Bale Mountains. They are the apex predator in their environment, feeding mostly on rodents
