They live in old rotting trees and dead tree trunks which they also feed on. The European Stag Beetle was one of a series of five beetles I drew in 2005 (color was added in 2007.) I love their massive pincers and deep red-brown coloration. They remind me of the 'junebugs' I used to see in the Mid-west where I grew up.
