The Fired-Bellied Toad is based on a photo by Dr. Giuseppe Mazza. It was completed in 2008. These are excellent and beautiful amphibians, and I've been fortunate enough to occasionally have them as pets. The striking green and black coloration is particularly attractive and was a lot of fun to draw. I regret somewhat it was difficult to show the fire red belly, but I would like to think this is not a bad angle to show the toad's wonderful patterns.
The Fire-Bellied Toad, also known as the Oriental Fire-Bellied Toad, is native to the southern part of Russia into northeastern China and parts of Korea and Japan. This toad inhabits forests, open meadows, river valleys and swamps. They are generally found in slow moving waters such as lakes, ponds and steams and even occasionally in ditches and puddles. The toads feed on a variety of insects including flies, beetles and ants, but will also take worms and snails. Due to their color as ease of care these amphibians are very popular in the pet trade.
