The Fire Salamander line art version was drawn in 2005 and the digital tinting added in 2007. The drawing is based on a photo by the talented wildlife photographer Pete Carmichael.
The Fire Salamander is the most familiar of the salamanders of Europe. These amphibians live in forests in the hilly areas of southern and central Europe, where they can be found in the leaf litter and rotting tree trunks. They spend much of their lives hidden beneath rocks, in wood piles and fallen trees and branches. They feed on insects, spiders, soil invertebrates such as worms and slugs. The Fire salamander probably got it's name from the misconception they were 'born' of fire, as they would be living in rotting logs that - when placed on a burning fire - they would then crawl out of.
