The Four-Spotted Skimmer Dragonfly was completed on 5.6.2012. This is the first insect I've drawn for the "50 State Project" - in which I intend to draw all official state animals of the USA. I had drawn one of these insects before, and I was tempted to use the existing ink drawing for the project. But as it was drawn many years ago the quality of the image wasn't very high. This new illustration is based on a photo by Jim Stuart.
The Four-Spotted Skimmer Dragonfly, also called the Four-Spot Skimmer or Four-Spot Chaser - is a commonly found dragonfly native to many areas of North America, Europe and Asia. It has one of the largest and most widespread range of any dragonfly on earth. The name comes from the four distinctive spots on their wings. Like other dragonflies, this predatory insect lives in and around ponds, vernal pools, slow moving rivers, marshes and bogs. It is the official state insect of Alaska.
