This drawing is based upon photos and sketches done at the Wildlife World Zoo in Arizona. I wouldn't say these are the most popular animal I've ever drawn (a friend of mine recently asked if I had ever sold a print and I had to admit I hadn't.) but I think Oryx are very cool animals. I think the coloration is good and the overall pose of the gemsbok is interesting. The grayish coat on these hoofed mammals is very beautiful.
The Gemsbok also known as a Gemsbuck, is a large antelope found in southern east Africa. The name is derived from the Dutch name of the male chamois, which is a horned ungulate that lives in alpine regions of mainland Europe. However, the chamois and the Gemsbok are not related. They are widely hunted and their horns are prized trophies, but unlike many of the large mammals in Africa they are not considered endangered. Gemsbok typically live in small herds of about ten to forty, which consist of a dominant male, a few non-dominant males, and females.
